The Blood Moon NIght

Last Monday night, I happened to be in the desert, at my place in Joshua Tree, CA. The nights are always beautiful there with clear star filled skies. However this particular monday night was going to be something special. Not only was it the night of the Hebrew celebration of Passover, which commemorates Moses leading the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt some 3500 years ago. But this night would also be visited by a rarely seen phenomenon. The rise of a"Blood Moon". The moon was to become dark blood red at around midnight. It all was sounding very "cosmic", sights and wonders, etc. In fact, what was going to happen was a rather unusual near total eclipse of the moon. As this happens the Earth bends the sun's light to the red end of the spectrum casting an erie blood red shadow across the face of the moon. Fortunately I had my camera with me, and I decided I had to get some long exposure shots of this Blood Moon business. But I had no tripod. No matter, I would improvise. As the moon began to rise, I propped my camera up on a large boulder and took off one of my shoes and used that to place under the lens in order to point it upwards and hold it steady. I set the shutter on a 30 second exposure, and started snapping away. I was not sure what to expect, but was dazzled by the results, which I am sharing with you here. Although the deep red color of the moon that was very visible with the eye, was somewhat lost due to the glow caused by the long exposure time. But many other things became visible that were not to the naked eye. I feel that the images capture the awe and sort of spooky feel of the thing, especially the later ones where the moon is high in the sky and the eclipse of it cause the sky to open up with stars by the thousands. Witnessing the Blood Moon, one could imagine the powerful affect such events would have on the ancients, who would have certainly felt that the Godz were on the move! I hope you like these images, and if you do then you will be happy to hear that this Blood Moon is part of a tetrad. A group of 4 lunar eclipses. There will be 3 more within the coming year, next one will come on October 8th, get your tripod ready! Photography by Sasha Eisenman
