JENNIFER HERREMA - Backstage and Live for TOKION

One night some time in 2001 I was sitting listening to records with my friend Liz Randall. I picked up one of her ROYAL TRUX albums and on the back sleeve was a photo of the coolest looking girl I had ever seen. I started saying something about how I would love to photograph her, and then Liz said "Oh I can make that happen, I know Jennifer really well. She's going to be in LA, Ill put you guys in touch." And that was the beginning of my friendship with Jennifer Herrema. Over the years since Jennifer and I have collaborated on many shoots together. The term "original" is thrown around pretty lightly sometimes, but Jennifer is the real deal, completely unique and original. This particular shoot was one of the first I shot of her. Basically, some strange fashion show was going on at a hotel in Beverly Hills and Henry Duarte was part of it. So Jennifer and I went down there and essentially crashed in on the weird back stage going on. Henry put Jennifer in an incredible deerskin suit with hand drawn multicolored patterns on it all over. We roamed around drinking champagne and shooting pictures. The photos ended up running in Tokion Magazine shortly after as a fashion story.
